After losing my father to brain cancer at the age of 13 I was left very unsure of how to
react or cope. I, like many others who have been significantly impacted by cancer, have often
wondered what could be done to stop such a monstroserous force. A relentless chronic disease
that seems to be grandfathered in to our lives. I couldn’t fathom why this unwavering beast
could never be put to rest by the millions of people around the world who would do anything to
see it smothered beneath the feet of the very individuals it effected. This is something I’ve
struggled with oh too often.
However, as of recently, I have changed my view on this hurdle to humanity. This enemy
of biological life is no different than any other opponent that must be defeated. Where there is a
will there will always be a way and I believe the way to beat cancer is to build momentum. I
have sat back for far too long watching others, including my sister, push back against the evil
forces of cancer. But now, you wouldn’t believe the overwhelming amount of hope I feel as I too
begin to build momentum in this fight. My thoughts have never been clearer. The cure to cancer
is passion and persistence. It is through these traits that we will win, but the only way to make it
happen is if we help keep building the momentum that’s making it possible.
Thankfully, I have been blessed with an amazing opportunity to add fuel to this fire. My
boss, The Redbud Group CEO Trent Corbin, was nominated to lead a team in the annual Man
& Woman of the Year campaign presented by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This
philanthropic competition is put on by LLS to support blood cancer research among a group of
motivated and dedicated individuals in communities across the United States.
Real quick, I wanted to share some stats that caught my attention off the jump. Of the 47
FDA approved treatments for blood cancer funded since 2017, 41 of them were made possible
by LLS. But also, they have funded 60% of the blood cancer therapies being used to treat other
forms of cancer as well. Now that’s definitely something I can get behind!
Upon joining Trent’s team, I immediately started brainstorming ways in which I could add
value. Here I am, a 23 year old fresh out of college with virtually no fundraising experience. It
was clear to me that I would need to be creative in my efforts. I began thinking of stuff I was
good at and how those things could contribute. I’m good at talking to people. I’m optimistic, able
to keep my spirits up. I’m moderately athletic (not a whole bunch of coordination going on
though). I’m good at executing a game plan. But most importantly, I’m passionate and
persistent. After taking a look at myself and considering what I had to work with I decided that
the best way for me to participate would be to talk my way into gaining monetary support to do
something out of my comfort zone. A remarkable feat that will test my mental and physical
capabilities for over a two month span of time. The venture that I have decided to embark on is
to ride a bicycle coast to coast across the United States, and what better way to do this than
accompanied by a squad of like minded individuals. A group of average Joes/Josephines,
coming together to do something extraordinary, all for the love of adventure and the desire to
fuel the momentum that’s making it possible for others to live out their adventures in life cancer
free.
So, that’s basically it! I’m raising money and I’m getting on a bike to ride 3,047 miles
from St. Augustine, Florida to San Diego, California. I’m hitting the road March 29 and I’ll be
swimming in that Cali water about 65 days later. It’s going to be quite the adventure and I sure
would love some company!
If you or anyone you know would be interested at all in joining me on this mission, I
would love to hear from you! I will be holding an informational session at The Redbud Group
office (400 Clanton Rd Suite C, Charlotte, NC 28217) on Monday, December 16, at 6:30 p.m. I
would appreciate if you could RSVP so I know what kind of numbers to expect. Till then, feel
free to reach out to me via call, text, or email if you have any questions or would like to show
your support in any way!
Reach out to me anytime!
